HIM BY H

There is no him without her

HIM.

THE PROJECT:

TO MARK MY 27 YEARS ON EARTH, I CREATED “HIM.”, A COLLECTION OF 27 POEMS. WRITTEN OVER THE COURSE OF 18 MONTHS ON TUMBLR, THE SELECTED WORKS WERE COMBINED TO TELL A STORY. WITH THE NARRATIVE IN PLACE, I WANTED TO CHANGE HOW YOU SEE POETRY. HOW IT MAKES YOU FEEL. HOW IT SOUNDS WHEN YOU SAY IT IN YOUR HEAD. I DIDN’T WANT TO DICTATE THE WORDS TO YOU—OR FORCE YOU TO TAKE THEM IN. A MARRIAGE OF WORDS AND CONSIDERED DESIGN, THE BOOK HAS BEEN GIVEN LIFE IN TWO PRINTED FORMATS: A PHYSICAL COPY AND POSTERS.

THE STORY:

HIM. IS ABOUT THE ROLE A SIGNIFICANT PERSON PLAYED IN MY LIFE. IT CAPTURES THE JOURNEY I WENT ON BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER WE ENCOUNTERED EACH OTHER. OTHER POEMS SPEAK TO THE BATTLE OF CONFUSION AND CLARITY I FACED WHEN LEARNING TO ACCEPT MY BRITISH/INDIAN HERITAGE. ULTIMATELY, HIM. IS ABOUT THE STRUGGLE SO MANY OTHER WOMEN FACE: LEARNING TO ACCEPT OURSELVES. I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND HIM. IN YOUR OWN WAY. AS I HAVE LEARNED TO DO OVER TIME.

THE PROCESS:

THROUGHOUT MUCH OF THE PROCESS, I FOUND MYSELF HEALING. I CONFRONTED A LOT OF FEELINGS WHEN I WROTE THE WORDS. I DEALT WITH THE SEVERITY OF THESE WORDS WHEN I SAW THEM LAID OUT ON THE PAGE—S/O TO KRISTIE LEE FOR UNDERSTANDING ME AND CREATING THIS BEAST. BY TAKING 27 LINES FROM EACH OF THE POEMS AND POSTERING THEM ALL OVER THE CITY AS A 27 DAY—COUNTDOWN, I FINALLY STARTED TO FEEL ACCEPTANCE. THANK YOU TO ALL THE CRAZY PEEPS WHO HAVE BEEN A PART OF THIS LIFE-CHANGING JOURNEY.

AND TO "HIM": I THANK YOU MORE THAN YOU’LL NEVER KNOW. FOR EVERYTHING WE LOST, WE GAINED SO MUCH MORE.
